KAITOU NAGANO
( Mister Midnight, Mister Midnight, I'm a part of your shadow parade. )NAME,Kaitou Nagano
NICKNAME,The Midnight Reaper, Tokai (his online alias and a childhood nickname), Leader, [several dozen derogatory nicknames that usually include ‘bastard’], Daisuke (his typical 'fake' name, also the name of his late father)
AGE,Eighteen, October 15
GENDER & PREFERENCE,Male, heterosexual
PROFESSION,None. No, seriously. He doesn't go to school, either.
PERSONALITY,Blunt and honest to the core, Kaitou isn't afraid to voice his opinion, doesn't care who's listening, and could give less of a crap if they become riled up by his words. He's brash, abrasive, and more than willing to pick a fight with someone in broad daylight. A master of the scowl, you'll rarely see any other expression on the cynical teen's face. If he went to Gekkoukan, he'd be a pretty well-known student delinquent. He doesn't, though. The last time Kaitou attended any sort of school is a faint memory for him, when he lived in Shibuya. Even then, he was a smart-mouthed punk (except you'd have wanted to pinch his cheeks rather than deck him back then), and upon moving to Tatsumi Port Island, he immediately integrated himself with the lowlife thugs at the Station.
Those who know the Reaper better can't defend such claims from the above paragraph very well; they're true, for the most part. Kaitou lost his parents when he was very young, and most of his life has been spent in an isolated white room, with doctors and scientists being the only people around him. They don't make for great company, and neither does Kaitou. At best, he's socially awkward, and at worst, well, scroll up. The teen isn't used to praise or compliments, only neutral remarks and insults, and no amount of literature can prepare you for reacting to such. Honestly, it's not like Kaitou tries to be rude, but it's the most familiar form of behavior to him, and he wouldn't feel comfortable trying to act differently.
However, that doesn't completely rule kindness out of Kaitou's personality. In actuality, he's very loyal to his teammates, and is more than willing to put his life on the line for their well-being despite not knowing them very well. He also possesses a surprising amount of charisma, enough that he can easily take command of a situation when necessary. The blonde has a soft spot for stray animals, especially cats, and his hobbies all lean towards a more passive, soft-hearted personality. Reading, cooking, caring for cats... None of these really fit the savage image of the street thug, do they? Kaitou values life greatly, and honestly, that's probably the only quality of his that gives him a strong connection to S.E.E.S.. Because of all the death he unintentionally incurred as a child, he treats every life as precious, even those of lowlife scum who he doesn't hesitate to beat down. The only exceptions to this are the members of Strega, who so casually erase the lives of others that Kaitou wants nothing but to erase them.
Speaking of reading, Kaitou has a voracious interest in books, magazines, or anything with printed text. He always has a different book in his hand by the day, ranging from cheesy romance to Egyptian architecture. Books have been the blonde's best friends since he was a child, before, during, and after his isolation away from the world. Perhaps they'll remain his best friends for the rest of his life, especially when you consider how poor he is at interacting with others.
Somewhere in the back of Kaitou's mind, he would very much like to fit in with the rest of S.E.E.S., act like a normal, socially enabled teen, and perhaps have his teammates see him as a friend rather than their leader (and if they do, then he's just too dense to see it). He's too stubborn to admit it though, and seems perfectly fine keeping his mannerisms the way they are to the group.
LIKES & DISLIKES,PREFERENCES
✓ Kaitou spends most of his time reading-- he's a total bibliophile.
✓ He's a really good cook, but Kaitou is never seen in the kitchen at the dorms unless it's to slap a quick sandwich together or heat up some ramen.
✓ Despite his thuggish demeanor, Kaitou has a weakness for animals. He has a tabby cat of his own, named Tango. Tango is very orange, and very spoiled.
✓ As of late, the teen's been fond of tinkering with machines, prying them apart and playing with their inner workings. This may or may not have something to do with his plans to work for the Kirijo Group in the future.
✓ Kaitou's favorite season is spring. He's not a fan of hot weather, though.[/ul][/font]
PEEVES
ALLIANCE,
S.E.E.S.; Leader-- Kaitou plays the leader role well, but fits better into the position of Defense Specialist and Strategist when you take a closer look at his combat records. He's also good at gathering information, and is pretty stealthy when he needs to be, so he can also fulfill the role of a Spy if he has to (and he has on occasion).
WEAPON & TACTICS,
Though few have seen Kaitou in battle, almost everyone in S.E.E.S. knows how the teen fights-- brutally, with his gloved hands. The teen is a street brawler through and through, fighting on instinct and reaction coupled with brute force. It is not the most elegant manner of fighting, but Kaitou plays it well, and is quite proficient with his fists.
In battle, Kaitou throws himself with reckless abandon at his foes, caring not how he exposes himself to attacks. He has a surprisingly sturdy constitution for his looks, and can withstand much more abuse than one would expect from a well-dressed, well-groomed teenager. Even though it appears that he fights purely on impulse, he actually calculates his every move, heavy-handed or sloppy as they may appear. After all, one cannot win on mere instinct alone. Kaitou will not hesitate to use terrain to his advantage, and can be rather... creative in combat with unorthodox plays.
With his Persona, however, Kaitou fights very carefully, conserving his energy for the right time to deliver powerful attacks in one fell swoop. He excels at defensive techniques, and is more than willing to put himself in the way of an attack to protect his teammates. Every action is measured, scrutinized to maximize its effectiveness so as not to waste any amount of energy. It may sound like he's one of those old chess players, but his thoughts fly a mile a minute, and are executed at the same speed so his opponents have little time to formulate a counterattack.
Kaitou also carries around several smoke bombs on his person, which are used either to flee from battle or cause a disruption. He also has a pair of trench knives that he rarely uses-- remnants of his old days as a delinquent.
PERSONA,
Alastor, The Tower, Awakened
ADDITIONAL NOTES,
Alastor, Kaitou's Persona, manifested from his soul when the Dark Hour first appeared. He did not Awaken until he was thirteen years old. Before that, however, Alastor would rampage around him at night, lashing out and attacking anyone near him when the Dark Hour struck. Friends, neighbors, and family members alike would be lying in pools of their own blood the morning after, earning Kaitou the title of Midnight Reaper.
Kaitou was made aware to his Persona's wild nature at an early age by the Kirijo Group, and they moved him to live in a controlled facility for the rest of his childhood, being let out only while heavily protected so that his Persona would not take any more lives. Because of his lack of contact with people on the outside, the boy absorbed himself in the books that resided in the building's library. His social skills are poor as a result, but he is very educated about the world, surprisingly so for someone shut away from it for so many years.
When Kaitou became Awakened to Alastor, the two got into an argument which was mostly one-sided, where Kaitou yelled and screamed at the other, calling him a murderer, threatening to kill him, and generally venting out his sorrow and frustrations now that he finally could. At the end of his tirade, he realized that he was no longer angry at the Persona, and that he had let his grudges go long ago. Over the years, the shaky bond between Persona and User has strengthened considerably, but there are still moments where Kaitou feels resentment towards Alastor.
One of the few television programs Kaitou watched as a child was Phoenix Ranger Featherman R. It was his favorite program up until... Well, he still likes it today, okay? For many years, the child fantasized about being a part of their world as a member of the team-- the leader, even. Kaitou's initial view of S.E.E.S. was sour and skeptical-- years of isolation because of the fact that he couldn't control his Persona made him resentful towards the Kirijo Group and anything associated with it. However, when he was invited to the group a year ago to serve as its leader, his childish memories of the TV show overrode his cynicism, and he agreed almost immediately. He does not regret the decision in the slightest.
From the late hours until early in the morning, while the other members of S.E.E.S. are heading to school, Kaitou spends his time gathering information on the other groups and reading any related files in the Kirijo Group databanks. From early afternoon through the evening, he'll be asleep in the meeting room (which he's made his own), and when it's close to midnight, he wakes up and makes a beeline to Tartarus to explore and exterminate Shadows. This rigid schedule has made Kaitou very elusive to the general Tatsumi Port Island population, and especially so to his fellow teammates. In fact, it might seem that Kaitou goes out of his way to avoid any contact with the rest of S.E.E.S. unless absolutely necessary.
Although everyone in S.E.E.S. knows Kaitou, few see him face-to-face outside of missions, and he only talks to Shirona and Shirako on a regular basis (even then, that's just to discuss matters regarding Tartarus and the other groups). In terms of the group as a whole, Kaitou lets Shirona do the leading; he trusts her judgment and sees her as a more effective leader anyway. Now, this doesn't mean Kaitou hasn't tried to make himself more open and available to the other members of the group, but any attempts at socializing with them has failed miserably, turning awkward within seconds. It became so embarrassing for him that he stopped trying after a week's worth of encounters.
Towards the end of each month, on a school day, Kaitou will cook for the entire dorm, which usually takes the whole day. The kitchen is sealed off to the rest of the members of S.E.E.S. until dinner time, during which a feast you'd expect to see from a professional caterer is revealed. The whole shebang. Except Kaitou isn't there. He'll be in his room, sleeping, and will not respond if anyone knocks on his door.
The Midnight Reaper was a nickname exclusive to when Kaitou lived in Shibuya. It didn't manifest in Tatsumi Port Island until he won his first brawl at the Station. After trashing the punks he was fighting, the words came out of his mouth before he could stop himself: "Don't fuck with the Midnight Reaper." And from there, it was history.
In regards to history, Kaitou established himself as a delinquent almost entirely by accident-- living in pseudo-captivity made him edgy and easily unnerved, and he often lashed out at the doctors and scientists who ruffled him the wrong way. Unlike the aforementioned people, street punks were not very inclined to restrain themselves when insulted, and on his first night out on the town, Kaitou got into his first fistfight. He lost miserably, but vowed that he would return to beat the snot out of his opponent. One week (and several books on how to talk and fight like a thug) later, he came back and fulfilled his promise. One thing led to another, and Kaitou found himself with several fights under his belt and a few lesser thugs under his command. Not what he'd intended, but he rolled with it anyway.
Kaitou ended up founding a small-time gang called the Pale Riders, whose members were signified by black handkerchiefs over their faces with the characters 死神 ("Shinigami") in white print. Their antics ranged from vandalism to racketeering to mass street brawls, and they grew into a city-wide nuisance over three years. However, before they could make themselves a real menace to the community, Kaitou abruptly disbanded the group, making some weak excuse to hide the fact that he had joined S.E.E.S.. To this day, he's sometimes approached at night by his old lackeys, and they'll sometimes share some small-talk. Next to S.E.E.S., the Pale Riders are probably the closest thing Kaitou's ever had to actual friends.
Tango, Kaitou's cat, was just another stray loitering about in the Station. Kaitou ran into him by chance one night with the gang, witnessing the tabby hissing and clawing at a group of other strays-- a lone cat backed against the wall. The teen sympathized with Tango, seeing a bit of himself in the feline, and broke up the fight. After confirming that the human who had interrupted wasn't there to shoo him away, Tango let himself be taken back home with Kaitou, and the two have been inseparable since. Tango is horrendously lazy and spoiled by his owner, and dislikes most girls for whatever reason.
And now that the important things are out of the way, how about a list of the other stuffthat I didn't think would be that important but maybe you want to know anyway:-- Kaitou has a little cousin who still lives in Shibuya named Hanako. She wrote to him often while he was living in isolation, but her letters never reached him until recently. In his spare time, he'll sit in the lobby of the dorm and read her letters. This is the only time one will ever see a smile on his face.
-- ^ Whether Hanako is still alive or not is questionable, as Kaitou can't get a hold of her through her address or cell number.Maybe she'll be another character.
-- Kaitou's natural hair color is brown, but he dyed it at some point after forming the Pale Riders. Typical delinquent.
-- Kaitou is ambidextrous, but his right hand is his dominant hand.
-- He's fluent in Japanese and English, and knows snippets of too many languages to count.
-- When Kaitou is reading, he enters a trance-like state of focus which tends to leave him oblivious to the outside world. This has caused many awkward accidents.
